01The group

A financial group for entrepreneurs and their families.

Argenthaler brings together corporate advisory, wealth management, principal investment and asset-backed financing. We work with entrepreneurs, family shareholders, fund managers and investors.

Founded in 2006, the group is led by its family shareholders and partners, with its headquarters in Italy. Our five divisions address decisions involving a business, its capital and the wealth of its owners.

We advise on transactions, invest our own capital and arrange financing. The role we take depends on the mandate.

How we work

Advisory, investment and financing.

01

Corporate and investment advice

Supporting company sales, acquisitions, capital raising and strategic decisions. Our advisory work also extends to fund managers and their investors.

02

Principal investment

Committing the group’s own capital through merchant banking, private equity and venture capital, including alongside clients and co-investors.

03

Financing and private wealth

Addressing the financing needs of businesses and asset owners, alongside investment, family governance and succession matters.

Partner-led relationships.

Responsibility

Partner involvement

The partners who advise our clients also own the firm. Senior involvement is central to the way we structure and execute mandates.

Coordination

Continuity across decisions

A company transaction can lead to new investment, financing and succession questions. Our divisions address these needs within the same group.

Investment

Capital alongside advice

The group can invest alongside clients and co-investors. Advisory work and principal investment have distinct roles, defined by the mandate.

Discretion

Confidential relationships

Mandate teams are kept focused and information is compartmented. Client relationships are disclosed with the client’s consent.

02Divisions

Advisory, investment and financing.

Our five divisions cover corporate transactions, private wealth, direct investment, venture capital and asset-backed financing. Clients work with the relevant teams as their needs change.

Division 02

Wealth management

Investment, family governance and succession planning for entrepreneurs and families whose wealth spans businesses, portfolios and private assets.

We consider private wealth in the context of the family’s business interests, investment holdings and future commitments. This connects portfolio decisions with liquidity needs, governance and succession.

Discuss a mandate

Areas of focus

01

Investment allocation

Consider the role of investment portfolios alongside business ownership and private assets, taking account of concentration, liquidity and investment horizon.

02

Family governance

Clarify how investment and ownership decisions are made across the family, and how responsibilities evolve between generations.

  • Investment horizon
  • Family governance

Division 03

Merchant banking

Principal investment, private equity and structured finance, with the group committing its own capital alongside clients and co-investors.

Merchant banking combines investment judgement with a direct commitment of capital. We assess opportunities across private equity and structured credit, considering the business, its assets and the proposed financing.

Discuss a mandate

Areas of focus

01

Private equity

Assess direct equity investments in private businesses, including the ownership structure, development plan and capital required to support it.

02

Structured finance

Consider financing structures in relation to cash flows, assets and repayment capacity. Review how debt and equity share risk within the capital structure.

03

Invest alongside clients and other investors where the opportunity fits the group’s investment approach and the terms of the transaction.

Who we work with

Business owners, management teams and co-investors.

Key considerations

  • Business fundamentals

Division 04

Venture capital

Capital for early-stage and growing businesses, with support for subsequent financing and strategic decisions as the company develops.

Discuss a mandate

Areas of focus

01

Early-stage investment

Assess the founding proposition, market opportunity and use of capital, with attention to the milestones the financing is intended to achieve.

Division 05

Asset-based finance

Asset-backed financing can provide liquidity against an existing holding. We consider the asset’s value, documentation, custody arrangements and marketability alongside the purpose and repayment of the financing.

Discuss a mandate

01

Art-secured lending

Consider financing against fine art with specialist assessment of value, provenance, condition and the arrangements for custody.

02

Key considerations

  • Repayment structure

03Principal investments

Direct stakes in the sectors where we advise.

04History

From 2006 to today.

Argenthaler was established in London and Germany in 2006 by François Garcin and his late wife Barbara as co-founders. The firm grew by taking early risk to back new investment vehicles, advising both the general partners who manage funds and the limited partners who invest in them.

2007 – 2011

Backing first-time managers

The founding practice: advising managers raising a maiden fund, and the institutions deciding whether to anchor them.

  • 2007Advised Unilever Plc on the launch of Physic Ventures' US$175m maiden fund
  • 2008Advised Tikehau Mezzanine on its maiden fund
  • 2009Advised Thomas Weisel Partners on Global Growth Partners, a US$115m secondary direct vehicle
  • 2010Advised Beechbrook Capital on the launch of its maiden fund
  • 2011Advised Chorus Capital on its maiden fund, and JP Morgan Asset Management on the launch of its Special Opportunities Fund
2012 – 2016

Beyond the fund mandate

Infrastructure financing, venture and bank strategy work widened the practice past fundraising alone.

  • 2012Advised Compagnie Nationale du Rhône on financing its renewable-energy portfolio
  • 2013Advised Mercato Partners on its second fund
  • 2014Advised Pantera Capital on its maiden venture fund
  • 2015Advised a consortium on the early financing of Bitfury Group
  • 2016Advised a Monaco private bank on its strategy
2017 – 2021

Digital assets, real estate, and a rupture

The balance sheet turned to real assets and digital infrastructure, before the loss of a co-founder forced a reorganisation.

  • 2017Advised Andbank on the sale of a US$100m venture portfolio
  • 2018Advised Deltec Bank & Trust on its technology transformation; announced the US$80m Series C financing of Bitfury Group Ltd
  • 2019Advised on a consolidation of French independent advisers holding over US$500m in assets under management
  • 2020Executed over €100m of residential and commercial real-estate purchases
  • 2021Co-founder Barbara Garcin passed away. The group entered a court-mandated reorganisation
2022 – 2026

Rebuilt, and held by the family

A new senior team, principal positions in the United States, and a global headquarters in Italy.

  • 2022Launched digital-infrastructure transactions under François Garcin, supported by a new senior team of advisers and partners
  • 2024Focused on United States market opportunities through principal investment
  • 2025Launched initiatives in technology, real assets and luxury; advised Mara Holdings on the acquisition of Exaion
  • 2026Opened a gemstone trading business in Asia and Europe; established global headquarters in Italy with regional offices in Central, Hong Kong SAR and Midtown Manhattan

“We are not trying to be the largest institution our clients deal with. We intend to be the one they call first.”

François Garcin, Founder
